Az-Zukhruf · Makki · ayah 32 of 89
Az-Zukhruf 43:32
“Do they distribute the mercy of your Lord? It is We who have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of this world and have raised some of them above others in degrees [of rank] that they may make use of one another for service. But the mercy of your Lord is better than whatever they accumulate.”

Essence
People who could not even share out their own bread wanted to decide where Allah's mercy should go; He alone measures every portion.
A reflection
You did not share out your own bread
The ayah opens with a question that is really a rebuke. A-hum yaqsimūna raḥmata rabbik: is it they who share out your Lord's mercy? Then comes the answer, with the emphatic naḥnu: We. We are the ones who shared out their living between them.
One commentary draws the argument out with care. They were not even able to manage the small matter of their own affairs. It was Allah who measured their livelihoods, varied their means and arranged their stations. Had He left them to arrange it themselves, they would have been lost. So what would they do with the far greater mercy of guidance and revelation?
This is how the ego shrinks without being humiliated. It is simply shown its own plate. The bread you ate this morning, the skill that earns your wage, the health that lets you work: you did not allocate any of it. You received a share.
An early commentator, quoted in several commentaries, noticed something about the people around him. You meet a man weak in schemes and halting of tongue, and his provision is spread wide. You meet a shrewd man with a sharp tongue, and his provision is tight. Allah divided their livings as He divided their faces and characters.
The pride that says my position proves my worth cannot survive that observation for long.
A software engineer is sure his salary reflects his brilliance. Then a merger cuts his whole team in one afternoon, the brilliant and the average together. Clearing his desk, he notices the security guard who has outlasted three reorganisations.
Allah does not announce His distribution to be praised for it. He needs nothing from those He feeds. The announcement is for us. It lifts a weight we were never built to carry: the pretence that we wrote our own portion.
