Az-Zukhruf 43:24

“[Each warner] said, "Even if I brought you better guidance than that [religion] upon which you found your fathers?" They said, "Indeed we, in that with which you were sent, are disbelievers."”

Saheeh International

Essence

The warner offered their fathers no insult, only the question of something better guided, and their refusal was decided before he finished.

A reflection

Not 'your fathers were wrong', but 'what if there is better?'

Listen to how the warner answers people who have just said: we follow our fathers. He does not say: your fathers were misguided. He says: awa law jiʾtukum bi-ahdā, even if I brought you something better guided than what you found your fathers on?

One commentary notices the courtesy. The fathers' way was in truth error, with no guidance in it at all. Yet the warner speaks of 'better guided', as though theirs had some guidance. He does this, the commentary says, to go along with them on a path of fairness.

That is a remarkable piece of persuasion. He leaves their parents' dignity intact. He does not ask them to condemn the people they love. He asks only whether they would consider something better.

Picture a young chef who joins her husband's family restaurant. The signature dish is her late mother-in-law's recipe, and the family guards it. She does not announce that it is outdated. One quiet afternoon she says to her father-in-law: this dish is the heart of the place. Would you let me try one change that might make it even better? He agrees to a taste. The conversation is about improvement, not betrayal.

The warner's sentence works the same way. It removes the hardest obstacle, the feeling that accepting the new means insulting the old. It frames the choice as a step forward, not a step against.

Anyone who wants to bring change to people they love can learn from this. Do not lead with what was wrong in their inheritance. Lead with what might be better. Leave room for them to say yes without having to say their parents were fools.
