As-Saffat 37:69

إِنَّهُمْ أَلْفَوْا۟ ءَابَآءَهُمْ ضَآلِّينَ

“Indeed they found their fathers astray.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The whole bitter meal is explained in one sentence: they found their fathers lost, plainly so, and never stopped to ask whether to follow.

A reflection

Found with the covering off

At dawn, a woman stands on a harbour wall. Low cloud sits over the bay. Then the wind comes in off the sea, and in a few minutes it strips the cloud away. The rocks at the harbour mouth stand there plainly, black and wet. They were always there. Now nobody could say they had not seen them.

The verb in this ayah carries that very picture. Alfaw: they found. But the lexicons say the root first meant uncovering, stripping away what lies over a thing. The wind strips cloud off the face of the sky. A knife strips flesh from a bone. To alfā something is to come upon it with the covering off. Not to glimpse it in a fog, but to find it exposed.

The verb is rare. The corpus data shows it only three times in the whole Quran.

So the ayah is not describing people who inherited an error they could not possibly detect. It says they came upon their fathers ḍāllīn, lost, and the word for finding implies the lostness was in plain view. One commentator says exactly this. Their fathers had nothing that could even pass as a doubtful argument, let alone a proof. Their error was obvious with the least reflection.

That changes the weight of the charge. The problem was not ignorance. It was a choice not to look at what was already uncovered. The cloud had lifted. They walked towards the rocks anyway, because their fathers had.

Most of us have inherited something whose flaw is in plain sight. A family habit of contempt for certain people. A way of handling money that always ends in debt. A coldness in how love is shown. We have seen it, more than once. The question this ayah puts to us is simple. Now that the covering is off, what will we do with what we found?
