Az-Zukhruf 43:27

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِى فَطَرَنِى فَإِنَّهُۥ سَيَهْدِينِ

“Except for He who created me; and indeed, He will guide me."”

Saheeh International

Essence

From all he disowned Ibrahim kept One: the One who split him into being and would guide him on a road not yet seen.

A reflection

Who you are without the lanyard

Illā alladhī faṭaranī: except the One who originated me. Ibrahim has just stepped away from his father's worship and his people's. What does he have left to say about himself? Only this: I was made by Someone. The commentaries gloss it simply: except the One who created me.

That is a remarkable way to identify yourself. Not by family, which he has just disagreed with. Not by tribe or town. Not by achievement. By the One who began him.

Picture a man at a large industry conference. All day he has worn a lanyard with his name, his title and his company printed in bold. People read it before they read his face. In the evening he takes it off in his hotel room and drops it on the desk. For a strange moment he wonders who he is without it.

The ego builds itself from lanyards: titles, followers, possessions, being someone's son or someone's boss. Each one can be taken away. Ibrahim had just let go of one of the strongest, belonging to his father's people. What remained was the one identity that cannot be removed: made by Allah.

That is the humbling and the comfort of this ayah. Humbling, because none of us began ourselves. Comforting, because the One who began us has not stopped attending to us. Fa-innahu sa-yahdīn: He will guide me.

Someone may ask why being our Maker entitles Allah to our worship. Is it not just power? It is more than power. The One who began you knows what you were made for. To turn to Him is not submission to force. It is returning to the One who knows your purpose.
