Az-Zukhruf 43:45
“And ask those We sent before you of Our messengers; have We made besides the Most Merciful deities to be worshipped?”
Saheeh International
Essence
No messenger before him was ever told to set up gods beside the Merciful, and that unbroken line is itself a sign.
A reflection
One message, many mouths
A-jaʿalnā min dūni al-raḥmāni ālihatan yuʿbadūn: did We ever appoint gods to be worshipped besides the Most Merciful? The question expects one answer. Never. Not once, in any message, to any people.
One commentary says the point is to call as witness the agreement of all the messengers on the oneness of Allah. It was not something new that Muhammad ﷺ had invented, to be denied and opposed for. Another adds that this is one of the greatest signs of his truthfulness. He brought the same message as his brothers before him, without having seen them or lived in their time.
Across centuries and continents, through different languages and laws, Allah's message on this point never changed. That consistency belongs to Him. Human ideas drift with every generation. His word on His own oneness stood still.
This is where the ego is quietly measured. People are constantly making small gods. Status, money, approval, a career, a political cause. The surah has just spent many ayat on silver roofs and gold leaf, the most glittering of them. And Allah asks: did any messenger ever tell you to worship these? None did.
Allah does not need exclusive worship because He is lacking something. He is free of need. The oneness is for us. A slave owned by many quarrelling masters, the Quran says, is not equal to one who belongs wholly to one (39:29).
A man works three jobs to keep up with friends who drive better cars. He is exhausted, and none of the three bosses is ever satisfied. When he finally drops two jobs and lives more simply, he says it feels like being let off a leash.
One Lord. One message. One master who is pleased. That is not a burden. It is freedom.
