Az-Zukhruf 43:55

فَلَمَّآ ءَاسَفُونَا ٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ فَأَغْرَقْنَـٰهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

“And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all.”

Saheeh International

Essence

After sign upon sign and promise upon broken promise, they provoked Allah's anger, and the water Pharaoh had boasted of closed over them all.

A reflection

Do not mistake patience for absence

Fa-lammā āsafūnā intaqamnā minhum: so when they provoked Our anger, We took retribution on them. Notice the word lammā, when. The retribution did not come at the first sign, or the second, or the fifth. It came when.

Look back over the passage. Signs, each greater than the last. Plagues, lifted at Musa's prayer. Promises made and broken, again and again. A king's speech mocking the messenger. Through all of it, Allah held back. Only then, at the end, did the anger come.

One early preacher, quoted in a commentary, warned his listeners in these words. You who disobey Allah, do not be deceived by the length of Allah's forbearance with you. Beware His anger, for He said: when they provoked Us, We took retribution on them.

This is where the ego is humbled. We tend to read Allah's patience as indifference. I did wrong, and nothing happened, so perhaps nothing will. Pharaoh's court read it that way for years. The rivers kept running beneath him. Then they did not.

Allah does not need anyone's punishment. He is not satisfied by it, nor diminished by delaying it. His patience is a gift, space to return. His retribution, when it comes, is not a loss of temper but the truth arriving at last.

A man keeps driving home from parties over the limit. For years nothing happens, and he jokes about it. One night, on an empty country road, it does. He survives, and says afterwards that the years without consequence had been the most dangerous part.

If you are living inside Allah's patience today, and all of us are, use it. It is a door held open, not a sign that the door does not exist.
