An-Nisa 4:80

“He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allāh; but those who turn away - We have not sent you over them as a guardian.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Obeying the Messenger is obeying Allah, for he brings only what Allah sent; those who turn away are Allah's to judge, not his to police.

A reflection

Does this make a man into a god?

Man yuṭiʿi al-rasūla fa-qad aṭāʿa Allāh: whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah.

A sceptic might hear this as a man claiming divine authority for himself. Some commentators record that exactly this objection was raised at the time. The hypocrites, the report says, accused him of wanting to be taken as a lord. Later hadith scholars noted they could not trace that report. But the objection itself is real, and the ayah answers it.

The answer is in the word al-rasūl. The ayah does not say 'whoever obeys Muhammad'. It says whoever obeys the Messenger, the one sent with a message. One classical commentator explains that the true commander is Allah. The Messenger only conveys the command. So the obedience is not owed to him in himself. It belongs to the One whose message he carries. Another commentator says the same. He commands only what Allah commanded, and forbids only what Allah forbade.

That is the opposite of self-deification. It routes all obedience through him to Allah alone.

Picture a postman delivering a court summons to a house. The man who opens the door does not argue with the postman about the hearing date. Nor does he imagine the postman is the judge. He knows the envelope carries someone else's authority. And he knows that tearing it up is not a quarrel with the postman.

Another passage says of the Prophet ﷺ that he does not speak from his own desire; it is only revelation revealed (53:3-4). The Messenger is the envelope that carries the message, and its trustworthy reader.

The ayah, read whole, makes the Messenger smaller in one sense and greater in another. He is not a lord. He is the one channel by which the Lord's will reached us.
