Ad-Dukhan 44:7

رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ

“Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain.”

Saheeh International

Essence

This Book's Sender is Lord of the heavens, the earth and all between, and the ayah asks if we are truly certain.

A reflection

Look at whose name is inside the cover

Picture a charity shop volunteer sorting donated books. She is tossing them into crates by size, not looking. Then she opens one and finds, on the title page, the author's own handwritten inscription. She stops. The book has not changed. What she knows about it has. She sets it apart and handles it carefully.

One commentator explains that this is the point of the ayah. After speaking of the Book, the passage names its Sender: Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them. If the One who sends is described with such greatness, then what He sends is of the highest honour. Another adds plainly that the One who sent this Qur'an is the Creator and Owner of all of it.

The ego can treat the Qur'an like any other book on the shelf, skimmed when convenient, judged by its first page. Pride decides the worth of a thing before asking where it came from. This ayah turns the reader to the inscription. Whatever you think of what you are reading, notice whose name is on it.
