Al-Jathiyah · Makki · ayah 13 of 37

Al-Jathiyah 45:13

“And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth - all from Him. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.”

Essence

Sun, stars, rivers and rain are all put to work for you, all of it from Him; only those who think it through notice.

A reflection

Kings rule what others built; He made what He rules

The ayah widens the previous one beyond measure. Not only the sea, but 'whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth'. The short commentaries fill in the list: the sun, the moon and the stars; animals, trees, rivers, mountains, the ships themselves. All put to work for human benefit.

Then two small words: jamīʿan minhu, 'all of it, from Him'. One classical commentator draws out what they mean. He brought these things into being by His power and wisdom, and then He harnessed them for His creation. They did not come to Him from someone else, he adds, as they do with kings.

That comparison is worth sitting with. Picture a newly appointed chief executive cutting the ribbon on a headquarters building. He did not commission it. He did not design it, fund it or lay a brick of it. The founders who did are long retired. But his name is on the plaque, and his speech says 'we built this'. Every human ruler, at some level, presides over what others made.

Allah is the only King who rules nothing He did not first create. The sun obeys the One who lit it.

Put your own small kingdoms beside that. The job title inherited from a predecessor. The team you did not hire. The house your parents' savings helped to buy. The talent you were born with. The ego treats all of it as self-made. This ayah says otherwise, and says it gently: all of it, from Him. Pride has nowhere left to stand.

Why say so? One commentator answers that since no one shared in giving these gifts, praise and worship belong to Him alone. That is for our benefit, not His. He gains nothing from our praise; we gain everything from seeing truly. A person who knows that his whole world is a gift stops competing for credit, and starts saying thank you.
