Al-Jathiyah 45:30

“So as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That is what is the clear attainment.”

Essence

After the desert of this surah's warnings, one sentence of arrival: those who believed and did good are brought by their Lord into His mercy.

A reflection

Across the waterless desert, alive

Al-fawz, the attainment, the triumph, has a desert behind it. The lexicons say the first hearers knew the mafāza: a stretch with no water for two nights or more. Many said it was named in hope, because whoever crossed it had fāza, come through safe. Others said it was named for the dying it caused. In a game of drawing arrows, the arrow that came out first had fāza, won. So the word joins two things: escape from what you fear, and arrival at what you love. The image is established.

Picture a walker on a long desert trail, two days between water points. She has rationed every sip. The heat has made her slow and quiet. In the late afternoon of the second day she sees, at last, the low concrete tank and the metal cup on its chain. She does not cheer. She sits down beside it, drinks slowly, and then cries. Not from pain, but from having come through.

That is the feeling fawz carries. Not merely winning a prize, but surviving the crossing and reaching the water.

The surah has been, in its own way, a hard crossing. Warnings, mockers, sealed hearts, kneeling nations, a speaking book. And then this ayah arrives like the tank on the horizon: those who believed and did good are admitted by their Lord into His mercy.

The commentators gloss al-mubīn as plain and evident. One concise commentary adds: the attainment beyond which there is no attainment.

Life can feel like a mafāza: long stretches with too little water, too much heat, and no sign yet of arrival. The ayah tells you that the crossing has an end, and that the end, for those who keep faith and keep doing good, is water.

Keep walking. Ration your sips. The tank is there.
