Al-Fath 48:21

“And [He promises] other [victories] that you were [so far] unable to [realize] which Allāh has already encompassed.[1515] And ever is Allāh, over all things, competent.”

Essence

Some gains lay beyond the believers' reach; Allah had already ringed them round and held them, for He is able to do all things.

A reflection

Inside a wall you cannot see the end of

A walker sets out to follow the boundary wall of an old country estate. She expects an afternoon stroll. Three hours later the wall is still beside her, curving over hills and down into woods. She never reaches its end. Everything she can see, the fields, the lake, a village, lies inside it.

Qad aḥāṭa Allāhu bihā: Allah has already encompassed it. The root of aḥāṭa has one meaning, the lexicons say: a thing going all the way round another. The first hearers knew the ḥāʾiṭ, the wall round a date grove. They pictured horsemen closing in on a man from every side.

Now look at what the ayah places inside that wall. Some commentaries say it is Makkah, which had just turned them away. Others say the lands of Persia and Rome. One classical commentator notes plainly that the Arabs could not fight those empires. They had long been their dependants, until Islam.

So the ayah begins with an honest humiliation: lam taqdirū ʿalayhā, you were not able to take it. It does not flatter the believers. It names the limit of their strength before it names the reach of His.

That is the shape of humility. The ego wants to hear 'you can do anything'. The Quran tells you what you cannot do, and then tells you who can. The great powers of the age, the ones that made the believers feel small, were already inside a wall that had no visible end.

Whatever looms over you today, a corporation, a diagnosis, a system you cannot move, sits inside the same enclosure. He does not need you to praise His wall. He tells you about it so that you stop being afraid of what is inside it, and stop imagining that the wall is yours.
