Al-Fath · Madani · ayah 28 of 29
Al-Fath 48:28
“It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion. And sufficient is Allāh as Witness.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah Himself sent His Messenger with guidance and the true way of life, to raise it above every other, and His witness is enough.
A reflection
He sent it; you carry only a corner
The ayah opens with a pronoun that points upward: Huwa alladhī. He is the One who sent. Not the army, not the Companions, not the Prophet's own strength. He.
Hear it where it falls. The believers were on the road home from al-Ḥudaybiya. A treaty had just been signed that looked, to many of them, like surrender. Some were asking whether the whole mission had stalled. Allah answers by reminding them whose mission it is. One commentator paraphrases the message. Do not think that day was a win for His enemy. Do not think He had let go of His Messenger and His religion. How could He, when He sent him?
This is a correction for the ego, and not only theirs. Every age has believers who quietly feel the religion rests on their shoulders. If their project fails, their circle shrinks, their argument is lost online, they feel Islam itself has lost.
Picture a stagehand at a long-running play. His job is the curtain. Over the years he comes to believe the show succeeds because he pulls it on time. On the night he is ill, he lies in bed sure it will be a disaster. The play goes on, the curtain rises, the audience applauds. His work mattered. It was never the reason the play existed.
The root of arsala pictures something released and sent forth, in a long line of others sent before. The sending is the Sender's act. The messenger's authority is borrowed, and so is ours as followers. Our efforts are honoured, but the outcome was never resting on our pride.
That is a relief, not an insult. You are not the guarantor of the truth. You are invited to carry one corner of it, with sincerity, and then to sleep at night. The One who sent it will see it through.
