Al-Ma'idah 5:32

“Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul[258] or for corruption [done] in the land[259] - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one[260] - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And Our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.[261]”

Essence

The world's favourite line about the value of a life begins at the first grave and ends with people who knew it and killed anyway.

A reflection

The line everyone quotes, and the words around it

After an attack, someone at a candlelit gathering holds up a hand-lettered card. Whoever kills a soul, it is as if he killed all mankind. Whoever saves one, it is as if he saved all mankind. People nod. It is a beautiful sentence, and it is quoted that way across the world.

That is the version most readers carry: a free-standing maxim about the worth of a life. The ayah itself is longer, and every missing piece changes something.

It opens 'because of that', pointing back to the first murder, one son of Adam killing the other. It says 'We decreed for the Children of Israel', so it is first a law given to a people with a history. It carries two exceptions: 'other than for a soul, or for corruption in the land'. And it closes with an indictment. Our messengers came to them with clear proofs, and many of them still went on committing excesses in the land.

Then the very next ayah sets out the penalty for those who wage war on Allah and His Messenger and spread corruption.

None of this cancels the famous line. It makes it weightier. The sentence is not a gentle wish written on a card. It is a verdict born at a grave, written into law and broken by people who knew it. The hard justice of the next ayah stands behind it. The worth of one life is not decoration here. It is the reason a whole legal order exists.
