Essence
In the gardens they receive, with open hands and glad hearts, all that their Lord gives them, because before that they lived beautifully.
A reflection
A hollow that keeps the rain
On a farm with dry summers, an old farmer spends a winter weekend digging a shallow pond in the lowest corner of his field. When the rain comes, it runs into the hollow and stays. In August, when everything else is cracked and brown, his animals still drink.
The Arabs had a word for that hollow: ikhādh, a basin dug in the ground that holds rainwater for days. It comes from the same root as ākhidhīn in this ayah, usually translated "taking" or "receiving". The lexicons give the root one meaning: gathering a thing into your possession. A hand closing on a camel's rein. A hollow that takes the rain and keeps it. This picture is established.
One classical commentator explains the word here as accepting every gift, pleased with it. Everything they are given, he says, is received with welcome and contentment, because all of it is good. He compares the ayah where Allah "takes" the charities, meaning He accepts them (9:104). A later commentator adds that taking implies receiving on purpose, with intent.
So the people of the gardens are not passive recipients having things dropped on them. They are like the farmer's pond: shaped to receive. Their hands are open, their hearts are glad, and what comes to them stays.
That shape is not made in Paradise. It is dug in this life. A heart that has learned to receive from Allah, His commands, His blessings, even His trials, with welcome, becomes a basin. A heart that resents everything given to it stays hard ground, and the rain runs off.
Ask today what kind of ground you are. Then dig a little: thank Him for one specific thing, slowly, as if you were catching it.
