Adh-Dhariyat 51:2

فَٱلْحَـٰمِلَـٰتِ وِقْرًا

“And the [clouds] carrying a load [of water]”

Saheeh International

Essence

The second oath is by the clouds that carry a heavy load of water, lakes held in the sky by nothing but His command.

A reflection

A lake held up by nothing

In a gym, a young man loads a barbell and props his phone on the floor. Then he grunts through three repetitions for the camera. The weight is real, and so is the effort. But the grunt is partly for the audience. We like our burdens to be seen.

Now look up. The ayah swears by al-ḥāmilāt, the carriers, and the commentaries agree that the clouds are meant, bearing their wiqr, their heavy load of water. One classical theologian says these loads are heavier than mountains. Another commentary marvels at the reversal. A cloud is among the lightest things in the sky. Then it takes on water and hail and becomes among the heaviest. Winds bear it on their backs, and it hangs between the sky and the earth with no pillar beneath it.

And not one cloud has ever grunted. They carry whole lakes across the sky in silence, and set them down exactly where they are sent.

This is where the ego is meant to feel its size. We strain under small weights and narrate every one of them. We want credit for carrying, sympathy for the strain, a witness to the struggle. Meanwhile the One who holds lakes above our heads asks no applause from the cloud. And the cloud asks none from us.

Is Allah then fishing for our amazement, swearing by His clouds? No. He needs nothing from the cloud and nothing from us. The oath is for the listener, to make him lift his eyes. Whoever looks up properly comes down a little lighter: less impressed by his own effort, and less anxious about the loads he cannot carry.

You are not holding up the sky. You never were. Carry what you have been given, quietly, and leave the lakes to the One who holds them.
