Adh-Dhariyat 51:47

وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيْنَـٰهَا بِأَيْي۟دٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ

“And the heaven We constructed with strength,[1545] and indeed, We are [its] expander.”

Saheeh International

Essence

After the ruined peoples, the sky: built and braced with strength by the One whose capacity never runs short and who keeps making room.

A reflection

A building with no plaque

The Arabic begins with the object, not the verb: wa-l-samāʾa, and the sky. Only then: banaynāhā, We built it. One classical commentator explained the order. The one looking for the Maker meets the work before the Maker. So the sky is put first, the thing nobody doubts, and then comes the claim: We built this. Know Us by it.

We do the opposite with our buildings. Outside a new leisure centre there is a brass plaque by the door. 'Opened by the Mayor', it says, with the date and a list of councillors in capital letters. The plaque is polished every week. The pool inside is already leaking. We are eager to sign what we build, sometimes more eager than to build it well.

The sky carries no plaque. It has stood over every generation without a name engraved on it. It does not need one. The building introduces the Builder.

The same commentator asked why the ayah says 'We built' rather than 'I built'. His answer was that this is the plural of majesty, the way a great king speaks. And it actually closes the door on partners more firmly. Every idol his audience worshipped was either carved below the sky or placed within it. Nothing below the sky, or inside it, could have built it.

This is where the ego is meant to shrink. We crave recognition for the smallest things: a post, a project, a donation with our name on the wall. The One who raised the whole sky signs nothing and asks only to be recognised through it.

A doubt may arise: if Allah praises His own work, is He seeking admiration? The ayah answers itself. A Builder who leaves no plaque is not seeking applause. He is pointing you towards what you most need to know: who holds the roof over your head. The pride belongs to us, who sign everything. The humility we learn here is to build well and let our work speak, if anyone's name is to be on it at all.
