At-Tur 52:1

وَٱلطُّورِ

“By the mount”

Saheeh International

Essence

One word opens the surah: a green mountain where Allah once spoke to a tired, frightened man, and where He can still be found.

A reflection

He came to bargain for prisoners

A man rides into Madinah on business. He is Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, a nobleman of Makkah, and his errand is political. After the Battle of Badr his people have captives held by the Muslims, and he has come to talk about them. He is not looking for faith. He is looking for terms.

The sun sets. The Muslims stand for the sunset prayer, and he hears the Prophet ﷺ recite. The surah is this one. It opens with a single word: wa-ṭ-ṭūr, by the Mount.

Al-Bukhari preserves what Jubayr later said about that evening. He heard the Prophet ﷺ recite At-Tur in the sunset prayer, and that was the first time faith settled in his heart.

Notice what did not happen. Nobody argued with him. Nobody handed him a leaflet or won a debate. He stood at the edge of a prayer he did not believe in, listening to words he had come to oppose, and something landed.

This is worth holding on to. We often assume people come to faith through argument, and arguments matter. But the Quran has its own way in. It reaches people who did not come for it, at moments they did not plan, through a door they did not know was open.

It also says something to the reciter. The Prophet ﷺ was not performing for a visitor. He was praying the sunset prayer as he always did. The recitation that reached Jubayr was ordinary worship, done well.

So the next time you lead a prayer, read aloud at home, or recite quietly with someone nearby, remember Jubayr. You do not know who is standing at the edge of the room. You do not know whose heart is about to receive its first settled thing.
