At-Tur الطور
Makki · 49 ayat · 49 with pondering
- Ayah 1One word opens the surah: a green mountain where Allah once spoke to a tired, frightened man, and where He can still be found.
- Ayah 2Allah swears by a Book laid down line by line, like palms planted in a row: what He has written stands, and nothing is left out.
- Ayah 3The Book is written on parchment spread open, not rolled away: nothing in it is hidden from you, and it was never meant to sit closed.
- Ayah 4Above the Kaaba stands a House that is never empty, crowded every day with angels who come once and never return: worship is the life of a place.
- Ayah 5The sky is a roof raised over you by Someone who never signs His name on it; every rooftop you are proud of stands beneath His.
- Ayah 6The sea you know is full to the brim, held back from the land by a command, and one day it will burn: one word carries all three.
- Ayah 7After five oaths comes the answer in four words: the punishment of your Lord will fall, and the One who warns is the One who raised you.
- Ayah 8There is no one to push it back: no wealth, no fortress, no clever plan, and only the One who sends it can defend you from it.
- Ayah 9The roof that has never moved over your head will sway like a palm in a gale, and on that Day nothing above you will be still.
- Ayah 10The mountains, the most settled things on earth, will set off like a caravan; nothing here was ever meant to stay, and neither were you.
- Ayah 11After the sky and the mountains, the camera turns to faces: so woe, on that Day, to those who made a habit of calling the truth a lie.
- Ayah 12The deniers spent their lives stirring empty talk and moving without aim, like a boat the sea plays with for a month, going everywhere and arriving nowhere.
- Ayah 13Those who shoved the truth away, and shoved the weak aside, will themselves be shoved towards the Fire: the push they gave becomes the push they receive.
- Ayah 14No narrator, no introduction, just a sentence: this is the Fire you kept calling a lie, said to people whose denial was a lifelong habit.
- Ayah 15They called the truth a trick all their lives; now they are asked whether the Fire is a trick too, or whether the fault was always in their own eyes.
- Ayah 16There, patience and panic weigh the same, because nothing comes after; here, every ounce of patience is carried forward, and that is why it is precious now.
- Ayah 17The mindful are not the gardeners of Paradise but its guests: they are in gardens, and they are in the joy of them.
- Ayah 18Their joy is real joy, inside and out, because it comes from their Lord, and part of what they savour is the Fire they were spared.
- Ayah 19Eat and drink with ease, because of what you did: three ayat after 'only what you did', the same words return, and now they hold far more.
- Ayah 20Those who once stood shoulder to shoulder in prayer now recline in rows, face to face, at rest, with nothing left to perform and no one left alone.
- Ayah 21Allah raises believing children to their parents' rank so the family is whole again, and the parents lose nothing by it: grace can be shared, guilt cannot.
- Ayah 22Allah does not stop at 'nothing taken away': He keeps adding, fruit and meat, whatever each person desires, with appetite and fulfilment always arriving…
- Ayah 23In the Garden the word for quarrelling becomes the word for sharing: a full cup passed hand to hand, with no empty talk and nothing that drags anyone down.
- Ayah 24Those who circled Allah's House are themselves circled in the Garden, by youths like pearls kept in the shell, whose service never wears their beauty away.
- Ayah 25The same words that describe the damned turning on each other in blame describe the blessed turning to each other in wonder: how did you get here?
- Ayah 26In the Garden they look back and name the secret: at home, where everyone else relaxed, their hearts stayed tender and watchful before Allah.
- Ayah 27After a lifetime of watchfulness, they do not say 'we earned it': they say Allah favoured us and shielded us from the scorching wind.
- Ayah 28They called on Him all their lives, and they knew why: because He is the Kind One whose goodness has no edges, the Merciful.
- Ayah 29Keep reminding: the labels they throw at you, soothsayer and madman, do not stick, because your Lord's favour is on you.
- Ayah 30Unable to answer him, they called him a poet and waited for time to kill him; the message outlived them all.
- Ayah 31Their threat is met without fear or bitterness: go on waiting, I am waiting too, and time will show whose waiting was wise.
- Ayah 32The city's famous minds contradicted themselves in a single breath; the ayah asks whether reason really ordered this, or whether pride did.
- Ayah 33They said he put the words in God's mouth; the ayah names the real reason behind the charge: they had already decided not to believe.
- Ayah 34Every accusation is answered with one open test: if a man made this, you are men of the same tongue, so bring speech like it.
- Ayah 35No third escape: nothing could have made you, and you could not make yourself, so Someone made you, and you answer to Him.
- Ayah 36From your own making the question widens to the sky and the ground: you made neither, and what you lack is not proof but certainty.
- Ayah 37They acted as if they held the keys to God's storehouses and the pen over His creation; they held neither, and neither do we.
- Ayah 38Anyone claiming to have overheard heaven must climb down with proof; without it, inside knowledge is just a ladder leaning against nothing.
- Ayah 39They gave God daughters, whom they despised, and kept sons: one question exposes a lie about God and a cruelty towards girls.
- Ayah 40They paid their chiefs and soothsayers gladly, yet turned from the one man who asked them for nothing at all.
- Ayah 41They predicted the Prophet's death and laid down rules for God as if they held the record of the unseen; they held nothing but guesses.
- Ayah 42They planned to trap the Prophet; the ayah announced, before the plot was even hatched, that the plotters themselves would be the ones caught.
- Ayah 43The chain of questions ends at its root, any god but Allah, and answers itself in wonder: how far He is above every partner.
- Ayah 44They demanded a piece of the sky as proof; had it fallen, a closed heart would have called it a cloud.
- Ayah 45Leave them to their Lord: a Day like a thunderclap is walking towards them, and will find them either ready or startled.
- Ayah 46On that Day their clever plans will not shield them by a hair, and no ally will come: both supports they trusted give way.
- Ayah 47Before the great reckoning come smaller ones, in this life and in the grave, and most people never recognise them for what they are.
- Ayah 48Hold firm under your Lord's decree, for you are under His watchful eyes, and when you rise, rise with His praise instead of their insults.
- Ayah 49The surah of mockery and plots ends in the quiet of the night and the last stars of dawn, with a believer glorifying his Lord.
