At-Tur 52:17
إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَنَعِيمٍ
“Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and pleasure,”
Saheeh International
Essence
The mindful are not the gardeners of Paradise but its guests: they are in gardens, and they are in the joy of them.
A reflection
The guest, not the watchman
A head gardener tends the grounds of a great house for thirty years. He knows every rose by name. Visitors come every weekend and sit on the benches he painted, eating ice cream in the shade he planted. In thirty years he has never once sat down there himself. He lives in the most beautiful garden in the county and has never enjoyed it.
A classical theologian noticed exactly that possibility in this ayah. A garden is a place of joy, he says, but a watchman can live in the finest orchard and take no pleasure in it. So the ayah adds wa-naʿīm: and bliss. The mindful are in the gardens the way a visitor enjoying them is, not the way the watchman is.
The word naʿīm carries more than comfort. The lexicons define a niʿma as a benefit given wholly for the good of the one who receives it. A gift laced with the giver's own profit is not a niʿma. This bliss is pure gift.
The ayah also answers what came before it. The deniers were told to enter the Fire and that patience would be the same as panic (52:16). Now the mindful enter gardens, and are told nothing about patience at all. Their patience is over. Only enjoyment remains.
Perhaps some of us live like the gardener now: surrounded by blessings we tend but never taste. The ayah is a promise, and a gentle question.
