At-Tur 52:16

“[Enter to] burn therein; then be patient or impatient - it is all the same for you. You are only being recompensed [for] what you used to do."”

Saheeh International

Essence

There, patience and panic weigh the same, because nothing comes after; here, every ounce of patience is carried forward, and that is why it is precious now.

A reflection

The same fire that warms

On a winter camping trip, four friends sit close round a fire. They hold out their hands and feel the warmth come back into their fingers. One of them has left his boots near the flames to dry. In the morning the rubber soles have melted into a shapeless lump. The same fire, the same distance, gave comfort to one thing and ruin to another.

The first hearers had that double picture in ṣalā, the root of iṣlawhā. The lexicons say it is about contact with fire. Iṣṭalā is to warm yourself at a fire. To hold a stick to the flame was to ṣalā it, turning it to make it straight and supple. A sheep held over the fire was roasted. Ṣilāʾ is fuel. The same contact can comfort or consume. That picture is established.

In this ayah the word has only one side left. Iṣlawhā: enter it, burn in it. One commentary describes entering in such a way that the fire covers a person from every direction. Another says: taste its heat by going in.

The contrast is worth sitting with. In this life, Allah lets us near the fire in ways that can still straighten and warm. Hardship, loss and discipline are heat. They hurt, but they can make us supple, soften what was rigid, warm what had gone cold. Many believers can name a hard season that straightened something in them.

On the Day this ayah describes, the warming side is gone. There is no straightening, only burning. The time when heat could still heal has passed.

That makes the trials of this life look different. They are fire held at a merciful distance, while it can still do us good.

When something hard comes this week, ask Allah to let it be the fire that straightens, not the fire that consumes. Then lean into it with patience.
