At-Tur 52:41
أَمْ عِندَهُمُ ٱلْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ
“Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?”
Saheeh International
Essence
They predicted the Prophet's death and laid down rules for God as if they held the record of the unseen; they held nothing but guesses.
A reflection
Predicting someone else's end
In Surah al-Tur this question has a particular target. Two commentaries quote an early authority who linked it to 52:30. There the Quraysh said they were waiting for time to strike him down. Do they know the unseen, he asked, so that they know when Muhammad ﷺ will die, or how his affair will end?
They spoke as if his ending were already written in their hands. It was not.
Picture a man who watches a young couple open a small café on his street. He tells everyone at the barber's that it will close within six months. He gives reasons: the rent, the parking, the coffee. Three years later the café is full every morning, and he is in the queue, buying a flat white and not mentioning his prediction.
That is a small, everyday version of the Quraysh's confidence. Announcing someone else's failure as if it were already recorded. The ayah asks the plain question that punctures it: do you hold the unseen? If not, hold your tongue about other people's endings.
