At-Tur 52:42
أَمْ يُرِيدُونَ كَيْدًا ۖ فَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلْمَكِيدُونَ
“Or do they intend a plan? But those who disbelieve - they are the object of a plan.”
Saheeh International
Essence
They planned to trap the Prophet; the ayah announced, before the plot was even hatched, that the plotters themselves would be the ones caught.
A reflection
Every scheme sits inside a larger plan
The ayah turns a question into a verdict in one breath. Do they intend a plot? Then those who disbelieve are the ones plotted against.
A concise commentary spelled out the meaning: their plotting returns upon themselves. Another explained al-makīdūn as the defeated, the destroyed: Allah protected the Prophet ﷺ from them and later brought them down. The Quran says the same elsewhere, describing the very plot this ayah anticipates. They plotted, and Allah plotted, and Allah is the best of planners (8:30).
A classical commentator noticed that 'a plot' is left vague, without 'the' or 'your'. That vagueness, he said, hints that the counter-stroke would come from where they did not expect it, suddenly, beyond what they could foresee.
Picture an office schemer who has spent weeks building a case against a rival for promotion. One evening he drafts a careful email to a senior manager, listing the rival's small mistakes. Tired, he presses 'reply all' instead of 'reply'. The whole department reads it before breakfast. The rival is offered the post the following week.
That is a small, almost comic picture of a vast truth. Every human scheme runs inside Allah's plan, not beside it. The schemer sees his own moves and perhaps his opponent's. He never sees the whole board.
This is where the ego loses its favourite illusion. People love to feel clever, to think that a well-made plan guarantees an outcome. The ayah strips that away. The cleverest plotters of Makkah sat in council, weighed every option, and chose their plan with care. They had no idea that the outcome had already been announced in a surah they mocked. The only safe place to stand is inside His plan, obeying, rather than against it, scheming.
