At-Tur 52:9
يَوْمَ تَمُورُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ مَوْرًا
“On the Day the heaven will sway with circular motion”
Saheeh International
Essence
The roof that has never moved over your head will sway like a palm in a gale, and on that Day nothing above you will be still.
A reflection
The roof begins to sway
On the fiftieth floor of a glass tower, during a winter gale, an office worker notices the water in her glass trembling. Then she feels it: a slow, slight lean, one way and back. The building is designed to sway in high wind. The engineers say it is perfectly safe. Still, for the rest of the afternoon she cannot stop watching the water.
Four ayat ago, the surah swore by as-saqf al-marfūʿ, the roof raised high. The sky, steady above every generation that ever lived. Now the same sky appears again. Yawma tamūru s-samāʾu mawran: on the Day the sky sways and heaves.
The first hearers had a picture for mawr. The lexicons give the root one sense: going to and fro. A tall palm tamūru when it rocks in the wind. Mawr is dust that the wind drives round in circles, and a wave. Blood māra when it spills and spreads over the ground. One commentary sums it up: coming and going, turning, rocking, heaving. One early poet even used it for a woman's graceful walk to her neighbour's house, like the gliding of a cloud. That picture is established.
So the ayah takes the steadiest thing anyone knows and gives it the motion of a palm in a storm. The commentators describe it as turning like a millstone, and tilting with those in it the way a ship tilts in heavy seas.
This is a deliberate reversal. The surah has just used the sky as evidence: look how firmly it is raised. Now it shows the evidence itself giving way. Nothing in creation is the final ground under our feet, or the final roof over our heads.
Notice what you lean on as if it could never move. Then lean, in your heart, on the One who holds the sky up today and will set it moving on that Day.
