At-Tur 52:8
مَّا لَهُۥ مِن دَافِعٍ
“Of it there is no preventer.”
Saheeh International
Essence
There is no one to push it back: no wealth, no fortress, no clever plan, and only the One who sends it can defend you from it.
A reflection
The flood does not check the badge
A flash flood comes down a residential street in the night. In the morning, people film what is left. The most expensive four-by-four on the road, the one its owner washed every Sunday, lies on its side against a garden wall. Next to it is the neighbour's twenty-year-old hatchback. The water carried both the same distance. It did not check the badges.
The word dāfiʿ had a picture for the first hearers. The root means moving a thing aside, pushing it away. A great torrent was called dufāʿ, because its water drives itself along, one wave pushing the next. A dāfiʿ is whatever can push back such a force. The ayah says there is none. And the little word min before it, by the grammar of the language, sweeps the field clean: not a single one, of any kind.
Now think about how much of our pride is built on being able to push things back. I can afford a good lawyer. I know someone at the council. I can work longer hours than anyone. I have savings for a rainy day. These are ordinary forms of strength, and some of them are wise. But underneath them runs a quiet belief: whatever comes, I will be able to deal with it.
This ayah takes that belief apart. When Allah's decree falls, there is no lawyer, no contact, no savings account that can push it aside. The four-by-four and the hatchback lie side by side.
Is it arrogance for Allah to say no one can resist Him? Arrogance is claiming a greatness one does not have. Allah is only describing what is true. The real arrogance would be ours, if we believed we were the exception.
There is freedom in admitting it. The person who stops pretending to be able to push everything back can finally lean on the only One who can.
