An-Najm 53:15
عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ
“Near it is the Garden of Refuge [i.e., Paradise] -”
Saheeh International
Essence
Beside the Lote Tree lies the Garden of Refuge: where a soul comes home at last, like camels returning to their people at dusk.
A reflection
Like camels coming home at dusk
Al-maʾwā is a word with an evening in it. The lexicons give its root two branches. One is drawing in. Camels coming home to their people at the end of the day; birds pressing close together; a wound drawing its edges together as it heals. The other is tenderness: awā lahu, his heart went out to him. A maʾwā is the place anything returns to, by night or by day.
A scholar of the heart defines it as the place one draws close to, comes to, and settles in.
So the Garden beside the Lote Tree is not named for its riches, its rivers or its fruit. It is named the Garden of Refuge: the place you come home to.
The word janna, garden, adds its own picture. Its root means covering. A janna is a garden so thickly grown that its branches cover whoever walks inside. Shelter upon shelter.
Picture a nurse driving home at seven in the morning after three night shifts in a row. The motorway, the roundabouts, her own street. She turns the key, and the house is quiet. Her daughter's school shoes are by the door. Someone has left the heating on for her. She sits on the stairs with her coat still on and simply breathes. Nothing extraordinary has happened. She is home.
That feeling is the smallest taste of al-maʾwā. Every person carries a longing for it: a place where the drawing-in is complete, the wound closes, and tenderness meets them at the door.
The Quran tells us where that longing is finally answered. Not in a house on earth, however dear. In a Garden near the boundary of creation, waiting like an open door at dusk.
