An-Najm 53:39
وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ
“And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives”
Saheeh International
Essence
Before Allah you hold exactly one thing that is truly yours: your striving, the steps you actually took, while the outcome was always His.
A reflection
Not a poster on the gym wall
This ayah has travelled far beyond the mosque. It is printed on motivational posters, quoted in business seminars, set over photographs of runners and climbers. In that setting it usually means one thing: you get what you work for. Hustle, and the results will come.
That is the reading most of us already carry, and it is only half the truth. It also gets the most important half backwards.
First, the ayah is not about worldly results. It is part of what the passage says was written in the scrolls of Musa and Ibrahim, and it concerns recompense before Allah. One modern commentary summarises it: no one gains reward except what he earned for himself by his striving. A few ayat earlier, the same surah insisted that the human being does not get whatever he wants, because 'to Allah belong the last and the first' (53:24–25). Effort does not guarantee outcomes in this world. Plenty of people strive hard and still lose the job, the harvest, the match.
Second, the ayah does not say 'you will have what you worked for'. It says 'the human being has nothing but what he strove for'. It narrows rather than promises. What is truly yours, credited to you, kept for you, is your striving itself: the walking, not the arriving.
Picture two people on the same team. Both work hard for a year on a project that is cancelled in the final month. The motivational reading says they failed: no results. This ayah says neither lost anything that was ever theirs. The project's fate was always in other Hands. Their striving, every honest hour, is recorded in full.
That is a very different ethic from the poster. Not 'work hard and you will win'. Rather: 'work honestly, because the effort is the part that belongs to you, and it is never wasted with Allah.'
