An-Najm 53:50

وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰ

“And that He destroyed the first [people of] ʿAad”

Saheeh International

Essence

The same Lord who enriches also brought down the first and mightiest of nations; strength He gave is never a shield against Him.

A reflection

Two ayat apart

Two days before an international final, a sprinter at the peak of his career steps out of a hotel shower. His foot slides on the wet tiles. He feels the hamstring go before he hits the floor. Eleven years of training are over in under a second, in a bathroom, with nobody watching.

Read the list this surah is building. He made laugh and made weep. He caused death and gave life. He enriched and gave to keep (53:48). He is Lord of the star. And then, in the same calm voice: wa-annahu ahlaka ʿādan al-ūlā: and that He destroyed the first ʿĀd.

Two ayat earlier, He was the One who enriches. Now He is the One who brought down the strongest and wealthiest people of their age. It is the same Lord, in the same list. There is no second power that gives and a different one that takes. The One who handed ʿĀd its strength was the One who withdrew it.

The commentators describe them as among the strongest and most powerful of people, and the most defiant towards Allah and His messenger. Elsewhere the Quran records their boast: 'Who is stronger than us in power?' (41:15). They had every reason, by human measures, to feel safe.

That is the quiet warning to the ego. We tend to treat our strengths as walls between us and Allah. My health. My savings. My contacts. My talent. They feel like protection. But every one of them was handed over by the One they seem to protect us from. A gift cannot be a shield against the Giver.

The sprinter was not punished for anything; his injury is not this story. But his fall shows how thin the line is between strength and its absence. Nobody holds their strength. It is lent, and it can be recalled on a wet floor.

So hold whatever strength you have with open hands. Thank the One who gave it. And never mistake it for armour against Him.
