An-Najm 53:9
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ
“And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Two bow-lengths, or nearer: revelation's closeness is measured in the units of a man who carried a bow, near enough to calm a frightened heart.
A reflection
Measured in the units of the listener
Qāb means a measure, an amount of distance. The commentaries list its sister words: qīb, qād, qīd, all meaning so much space. And they note how the Arabs measured. By the bow, the spear, the whip, the cubit, the fathom of outstretched arms, the step, the hand-span, the finger.
These were not abstract units. They were things a man carried every day. A bow hung on his shoulder. A spear leaned against his tent. Everyone in the first audience could picture two bow-lengths instantly, because they had held a bow.
So when the Quran measures the angel's nearness, it does not reach for a cosmic unit. It uses the bow on the listener's back.
Picture a nurse preparing an anxious patient for a small procedure. She could say the incision will be eighteen millimetres. The patient nods without seeing anything. Instead she holds up her little finger and says: about the top half of this. His shoulders drop. He can picture it, and so it is no longer a terror.
The Quran does this constantly. It speaks of seeds and date-stones, of camels and clouds, of the bow and the well. It describes the unseen in the furniture of the hearer's life.
There is a lesson in that for anyone who explains anything. Speak in your listener's units, not yours. The engineer, the scholar, the doctor all have precise words that mean nothing to the person in front of them. Find what they carry every day, and measure with that. Truth told in units people can hold is truth they can actually receive.
