Al-Qamar 54:19

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِى يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُّسْتَمِرٍّ

“Indeed, We sent upon them a screaming wind on a day of continuous misfortune,”

Essence

A people who boasted that no one was stronger than them were undone by the one thing no muscle can grip: the wind.

A reflection

Strength that cannot grip the wind

A champion weightlifter, a man who can lift three times his own weight, is walking along a seaside promenade in a storm. A gust comes off the sea and knocks him clean off his feet. He sits on the wet stones, laughing in disbelief. All that strength, and nothing to push against.

The Quran records ʿĀd's boast in another surah. They grew arrogant in the land without right and said: who is mightier than us in strength? (41:15). They were famous for their power, their buildings, their stature.

This ayah gives the answer. Innā arsalnā ʿalayhim rīḥan ṣarṣaran: indeed We sent upon them a screaming, freezing wind. Not an army they could fight. Not a rival nation they could outbuild. Wind. The one force that has no body to wrestle, no wall to climb, no face to stare down.

The commentators describe it as violently cold and roaring, blowing hard against them. One commentary says it tore people from their places, threw them on their heads and broke their necks. The next ayah will finish the picture.

That is the shape of every ego's downfall. Pride trains itself to win against what it can see and grip: competitors, critics, obstacles. It is never ready for what cannot be gripped. Illness that arrives on the air. Loss that blows in at night. Time itself.

Is this Allah taking pleasure in crushing human strength? The context answers. ʿĀd were sent a messenger first, and denied him (54:18). The wind came after the warning, not instead of it. And Allah gains nothing from any of it; He is free of all need (35:15). The point is not that He wishes to humiliate people. It is that strength without humility is a house built in the path of the wind.

The question for any of us is simple. Where is my strength pointing? At the things I can grip, or at the One who sends the wind?
