Al-Qamar 54:18

كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

“ʿAad denied; and how [severe] were My punishment and warning.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The refrain returns, but now it comes before the story: "'Ad denied", and then, before a single detail, the call to listen.

A reflection

The question asked before the story

A guide at an old castle stops the tour group at the top of the dungeon steps. Before I tell you what happened down there, she says, I want you to be quiet for a moment. The chatter dies. Only then does she begin.

This is the second time the refrain appears, and its full treatment is at 54:16. But something has changed. At 54:16 it closed the story of Nuh, asked after the flood, as an exclamation of wonder. Here it comes straight after two words, "ʿĀd denied", before a single detail of their punishment has been told.

One commentator explains the difference. Here the question is meant to turn the hearts of the listeners towards attention before the account is given, not to magnify it afterwards. It is as if the ayah said: ʿĀd denied; have you heard? Then listen to how My punishment and My warning were. The details follow in the next two ayat: the screaming wind, the people torn up like palm trunks. And the refrain will return at 54:21 to close the story.

So the same words do two jobs. After a story, they ask you to stop and wonder. Before a story, they ask you to stop and listen. Both are invitations to silence.

When you recite this line, let it be the guide at the top of the steps.
