Al-Qamar · Makki · ayah 31 of 55
Al-Qamar 54:31
إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِ
“Indeed, We sent upon them one shriek [i.e., blast from the sky], and they became like the dry twig fragments of an [animal] pen.”

Essence
A people who had carved homes into mountains were ended by one cry, and left like the brittle thorn-branches of an old sheep pen.
A reflection
One sound, and nothing more was needed
A financial firm has locked server rooms, guards at the door and engineers watching every screen. It is brought to a standstill by one email. A clerk clicks a link. That is all it takes. The walls were real. They were simply facing the wrong way.
Thamūd were builders. Elsewhere the Quran says they carved houses out of the mountains, feeling secure (15:82). Stone was their pride and their safety. And the ayah answers all of that stone with two words: ṣayḥatan wāḥidatan, a single cry.
The root of ṣayḥa pictures a voice at the full stretch of its capacity. One lexicon notes that the Arabs borrowed it for a tree that shot up. Its height announced itself the way a shout announces the shouter. This picture is established. Several commentaries identify the cry as that of Jibrīl. The ayah does not even say a second one was needed. Wāḥidatan: one.
This is where the ego shrinks. We measure our security in walls and savings and qualifications, in reputations built over decades. None of those is wrong. But all of them sit inside a world where the One who sent that cry can undo any arrangement with a word. Pride says: I am safe because of what I have built. Humility says: I am safe only while He keeps me.
Why would Allah describe His power this way? He gains nothing from our awe. The description is for us, so that we stop trusting the stone and start trusting its Maker. One modern commentary says simply: they perished to the last of them. The lesson is not that building is futile. It is that nothing you build can stand between you and Him.
Carry this into your own sense of safety. When you lock the door tonight, it is fine to check the lock. Then remember Who actually keeps the house standing, and thank Him for one more night.
