Al-Qamar 54:27

إِنَّا مُرْسِلُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةً لَّهُمْ فَٱرْتَقِبْهُمْ وَٱصْطَبِرْ

“Indeed, We are sending the she-camel as trial for them, so watch them and be patient.[1583]”

Essence

They demanded a sign on their own terms and received it as a test, the fire that shows what we are made of.

A reflection

The sign they ordered became their test

A student fails an exam and has to resit it. The night before, he makes a deal with God: if I pass, I will never miss a prayer again. He passes. For three weeks he prays every prayer. Then, slowly, the old habits return. The result he demanded did not change him. It only showed him who he was.

Thamud made a demand too. The commentaries say they asked Salih for a specific sign: a she-camel brought out of a particular rock. One commentator says Allah sent the very camel Thamud had asked for, from the hill they named. It was a sign and a proof of Salih's truthfulness. Innā mursilū al-nāqati: indeed We are sending the she-camel. Another explains that "sending" here means bringing her out of the rock, while keeping its plain sense of dispatching her to them.

Notice the ego in their request. They did not ask whether Salih was truthful. They set the terms of the proof themselves: this rock, this animal, now. It is the stance of a customer placing an order. Prove yourself on my conditions, and then perhaps I will consider you.

And Allah granted it. Not because He needed to satisfy them, but because He is able. A camel from a rock is nothing to the One who made the rock and every camel. Our demands do not test His power. They test us.

That is the force of the next word: fitnatan lahum, as a test for them. One commentary explains: to see whether they would believe and follow Salih once the camel came, or deny him and disbelieve.

Is this Allah toying with people? No. He is free of all need (35:15). Their belief would add nothing to Him. The test was a mercy: one more door opened, exactly where they had asked for it.

The humbling lesson is simple. When we get what we demanded from Allah, the conversation is not over. It has just begun.
