Al-Qamar 54:34

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ۖ نَّجَّيْنَـٰهُم بِسَحَرٍ

“Indeed, We sent upon them a storm of stones, except the family of Lot - We saved them before dawn.”

Saheeh International

Essence

A wind full of stones was sent on a whole town, and one small household was drawn out before dawn.

A reflection

He is not bound to one way of rescuing

When the river burst its banks, a family on a low street waited at an upstairs window for the fire service. It did not come; the roads were cut. What came instead was a neighbour from three doors down, paddling a canoe he had not used in years. They had been looking in one direction for help. It arrived from another.

One classical commentator notices something about how this rescue happened. Allah could have kept Lūṭ's family safe inside the town while the stones fell around them. He did something like that elsewhere, he observes. With ʿĀd, the wind tore up the deniers while the believers came to no harm. With Nūḥ, He gave the believers a refuge to ride in. Here He chose a third way: najjaynāhum bi-saḥarin, We brought them out before dawn. He ordered them to leave the town in the last part of the night.

Three peoples, three different methods of rescue. The One who rescues is not bound to any single route. That is majesty.

This is where the ego has to bow. Pride decides in advance how help ought to come. It must be this job, this person, this cure, this timing. When it comes another way, pride can fail even to recognise it as help. Lūṭ's family had to walk out into the dark, leaving home and town behind. Their rescue looked like loss.

Is Allah showing off His power by describing rescue and ruin in one breath? He needs nothing from our admiration. The ayah sets the two side by side so that we stop trusting the storm's direction and start trusting the One who sends it. One modern commentary puts the result plainly: the punishment did not touch them.

When you pray for help this week, ask for the help itself, not for your preferred route to it. Then keep looking out of every window, not just the one facing the road.
