Al-Qamar 54:39

فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

“So taste My punishment and warning.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The words return after the morning ruin: the blinding was a private taste, and now the whole town tastes what it was warned of.

A reflection

Justice that is not absent-minded

A woman spends four years reporting a colleague's harassment. Each time, she feels the complaint vanish into a system that is too busy to care. Then, one afternoon in a tribunal, she hears the finding read aloud, line by line. Every incident she logged is there. Someone was listening all along.

One classical commentator, explaining the command fa-dhūqū, taste, offers several readings. It may be words spoken to them through the angels. It may be addressed to every denier: you used to deny, so taste. Or it may follow the pattern of human speech. A ruler hears the cries of a guilty man being punished and says, "Taste it; you deserved it", knowing the man cannot hear him.

What matters is the purpose he gives. It is, he says, a declaration of justice. In effect: I am not heedless of your punishment, so that you might slip free through screaming and pleading. I know you, and you have earned it by what you did.

That is majesty, and it cuts the ego at its root. Pride assumes that consequences can be talked away, delayed, appealed or drowned out. Lūṭ's people spent a whole night threatening a prophet as if noise could change the morning. Nothing they said reached the decree.

Is this Allah gloating over suffering? No. Gloating needs the one who gloats to feel bigger. He is already greatest; He needs nothing from their pain. What the words announce is that His justice is not absent-minded. For every person who has ever been wronged and felt unheard, that is not a threat. It is a promise.

If you carry an injury nobody acknowledged, take it to Him in prayer tonight. Nothing you lay before Him is lost in the system.
