“And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.[1580]”
Saheeh International
Essence
Once the water has settled, the surah asks how His punishment and His warnings were, a question that needs no answer but silence.
A reflection
"My" punishment, from the Lord they once acknowledged
Through the whole account of the flood, Allah has spoken as "We". We opened the gates of the sky. We made the earth burst. We carried him. It sailed under Our eyes. Then, in this closing line, the voice changes. Fa-kayfa kāna ʿadhābī wa-nudhur: so how were My punishment and My warnings?
A classical theologian asks why the shift to "My". He gives a reason of sound: the ending of the verse flows better this way. Then he offers a reason of meaning. The word muddakir, one who remembers, recalls in his view the oldest covenant. Allah asked the souls of humanity: am I not your Lord (7:172)? That question used "I", and all answered: yes. So now, after the reminder, comes "My punishment". It is personal. The One whose lordship they had once confessed is the One they met.
That is deeply humbling. The arrogance of Nuh's people was not against an idea or an institution. It was against a Lord they had acknowledged before they were born. Every proud refusal of guidance carries that shape. The ego says "no" to the One to whom the soul once said "yes".
A sceptic might ask whether Allah is boasting of His power to punish. Look at the second word: nudhur, My warnings. The punishment never stands alone in this refrain. It is always paired with the warnings that came first. One commentary describes the punishment as great and painful, but it fell on those who had disbelieved and been warned, and did not take heed. Allah needs no one's fear for His own sake; He is free of all need (35:15). The warning is the mercy; the punishment is the justice that follows mercy refused.
The ayah humbles the ego in a single word. Whatever we are tempted to defy, we are defying "My", the Lord who made us and whom we once knew.
