Al-Hadid · Madani · ayah 4 of 29

Al-Hadid 57:4

“It is He who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne.[1627] He knows what penetrates into the earth and what emerges from it and what descends from the heaven and what ascends therein; and He is with you[1628] wherever you are. And Allāh, of what you do, is Seeing.”

Essence

The One who rose over the Throne knows every seed, raindrop and deed, and is with you wherever you are.

A reflection

From the Throne to a single raindrop

Read the ayah as a camera would film it. It opens on the widest shot there is: the heavens and the earth, brought into being in six days, and then the Throne. Then it cuts, without warning, to the smallest. A seed slipping into soil. A shoot pushing out of it. Rain falling. Something rising up into the sky. Then closer still: you, wherever you are. And it ends on what your hands are doing.

The commentators fill the small shots in. What enters the earth is rain and seed and the bodies of the dead. What comes out of it is every plant, crop and mineral. What comes down from the sky is rain, provision, revelation and the angels. What climbs up into it is the angels and the deeds of people, good and bad. One commentary says He knows the number of the seeds and the drops that enter the ground. Another ayah says no leaf falls without His knowing it (6:59).

Now picture a logistics analyst, rightly proud of his work. On the wall of his office is a live map of the city, every delivery van a moving dot. He can tell you which driver is late, which street is jammed, which parcel is three minutes away. It is impressive, and it took a team of engineers years to build. It covers one city, one company, one kind of vehicle, and it goes dark when the servers fail.

Set that beside an ayah that claims every raindrop on every field and every seed in every furrow. Every word rising from every mouth, too, without effort and without a gap. The point is not that the dashboard is foolish. The point is that our pride in knowing things shrinks to its true size here. Even our best knowledge is one lit window in a dark house, and humility means saying so. The One who built the house has every room lit at once. And He chose to end this sweeping ayah not with galaxies, but with you.
