Al-Hashr · Madani · ayah 14 of 24
Al-Hashr 59:14
“They will not fight you all except within fortified cities or from behind walls. Their violence [i.e., enmity] among themselves is severe. You think they are together, but their hearts are diverse. That is because they are a people who do not reason.”

Essence
Their show of unity was only a wall seen from outside; behind it, hearts that could not even trust each other had nothing left over to face anyone from without.
A reflection
Brave only behind something solid
A guard dog barks ferociously at every passer-by from behind a locked gate, yet bolts the moment the gate swings open and the stranger actually steps through. The ferocity was real in one sense and entirely conditional in another, dependent from the first bark to the last on a barrier the dog itself had not built and could not hold on its own.
The ayah describes exactly this conditional courage. The Naḍīr's allies would not meet the believers together in the open; whatever fight they had in them only showed itself behind fortified towns or from behind walls. Muḥaṣṣana, fortified, shares its root with ḥiṣn, a stronghold, something that does the actual work of protecting, leaving the person inside it credit for nothing except the decision to stay behind it.
This matters because confidence displayed only under cover is not the same thing as courage, however loud it sounds from inside the walls. A person who is bold only when a structure, a title, a crowd, or an institution stands between them and direct consequence has not demonstrated bravery. They have demonstrated the strength of the wall, which is a different and much smaller thing to have proven about oneself. The bark proves only that the gate still holds, nothing more about what stands behind it.
