Al-Hashr · Madani · ayah 15 of 24

Al-Hashr 59:15

“[Theirs is] like the example of those shortly before them: they tasted the bad consequence of their affair, and they will have a painful punishment.”

Essence

The Nadir's fate had already played out, recently and close by, to a people who repeated the same mistake and did not see the pattern in time.

A reflection

Recent, and near, not ancient and distant

The ayah does not reach for a distant, half-legendary precedent from centuries earlier. Qarīban, recently, close by, points to something that had happened a short time before, to people the Nadir could have asked about directly, in some cases people they likely knew personally. The commentaries connect this to the Banu Qaynuqa, another Jewish clan of Madinah, expelled not long before the Nadir's own fate for breaking their own agreements with the believers.

This closeness in both time and place changes how the warning should be read. A lesson drawn from a story so old it feels more like myth than memory is easy to file away as belonging to a different world, with different rules. A lesson drawn from an almost identical situation, involving people within living memory, in the very same city, offers no such comfortable distance. The Nadir did not need imagination to see where their own choices were heading. They needed only to look at what had already happened, recently, to people very much like themselves. No imagination was required of them, only an honest look at what had already, recently, taken place.
