Essence

Their last hope was numbers, a united host sure to prevail, and the Quran reports it as a claim that exists only in words.

A reflection

"Everyone" means the six of us

A group of six girls in Year 10 decide a new classmate is "weird". By Friday they are saying that everyone thinks so. In fact most of the year has barely noticed her. But in the six girls' minds, they are everyone. Anyone outside the circle does not count.

The word in the ayah is jamīʿ. Its root means things pressed together: scattered things drawn close until they form one heap or one crowd. This picture is established. One classical commentator says the word carries two ideas at once, number and agreement. We are many, and we are united, so victory is ours.

Then he offers a second, sharper reading. Jamīʿ may mean: we are all of the people, and there is no one outside us. The ones who followed the Prophet did not count. He links it to what Nūḥ's people said: shall we believe you, when the lowest follow you (26:111)? On that reading, the claim is not only about strength. It is about who gets to be considered a person at all.

This is a very human illusion. Every in-group is tempted to mistake itself for the world. A family, a clique, a party, a congregation. Those inside feel numerous and right. Those outside become "nobody", even when they are the ones carrying the truth.

The early believers in Makkah were few and oppressed in the land (8:26). To the leaders of Quraysh they were not part of the count. Within a few years, the count had reversed.

Notice when you say "everyone" and mean only your circle. Ask who is standing outside it, and whether you have quietly decided they do not count. Then go and listen to one of them.
