Al-Hashr · Madani · ayah 16 of 24

Al-Hashr 59:16

“[The hypocrites are] like the example of Satan when he says to man, "Disbelieve." But when he disbelieves, he says, "Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I fear Allāh, Lord of the worlds."”

Essence

Satan's promise of backing always ends the same way, with him stepping back the moment the cost actually lands and the person who trusted him left alone to face it.

A reflection

The exact shape of the betrayal, named

The commentaries draw the comparison directly: just as the hypocrites promised the Nadir support and vanished the moment real fighting began, so Satan promises a person backing for a wrong step and disappears the moment that step actually has to be paid for. The ayah places both stories side by side deliberately, one historical and immediate, one as old as temptation itself, because they are, underneath the different details, exactly the same pattern.

This is worth naming precisely because it recurs everywhere at a smaller scale than either story's original setting. Someone urges a friend into a plan with full confidence, disappears the moment it goes wrong, and is nowhere to be found when the consequences actually arrive. The specific content changes. The shape, encouragement followed by abandonment at the exact moment it would have cost the encourager something to stay, repeats with remarkable consistency, and this ayah names it as Satan's own signature move, visible in both a besieged clan's broken alliance and the oldest temptation there is.

A friend who talks another into a risky investment with total confidence, insists repeatedly that everything will work out, and is nowhere to be reached once the investment collapses and the losses need explaining, has lived out a smaller, modern version of exactly the shape this ayah is naming, often without ever recognising the old pattern they were repeating.
