Al-Hashr · Madani · ayah 22 of 24

Al-Hashr 59:22

“He is Allāh, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed.[1657] He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.”

Essence

Asked who could speak words that would split a mountain, the surah answers with two things first: He knows everything hidden, and He is merciful.

A reflection

Our knowledge is the lit sliver

The ayah gives Allah a title that sets the edges of all human knowledge: Knower of the unseen and the witnessed.

The witnessed, al-shahāda, is everything any creature can perceive. The unseen, al-ghayb, is everything beyond that. One commentary sharpens it: the absolute unseen is what no created knowledge or sense has ever touched. He knows both, and the ayah places the unseen first.

That order humbles the part of us that is proudest of knowing. Human beings measure their standing by what they know: qualifications, expertise, the confident explanation at dinner. All of it sits inside the witnessed, and only a sliver of that. Beyond it lies a far larger dark, and Allah's knowledge begins there.

A classical commentator offers a reason for the order. Knowledge of the unseen is like the proof of knowledge of the witnessed. Whoever knows what is hidden certainly knows what is plain. Another adds a striking thought. Every witnessed thing was once unseen. Everything that has emerged into view came out of the treasuries of the unseen.

The ego dislikes this picture because it shrinks the self's map to its true size. But there is relief in it too. You are not required to know everything. You are not the one holding the unseen in place. The One who does is named in the very next breath as the Merciful. The vast dark beyond your knowledge is not empty, and it is not hostile. It is known, and held, by Him.
