Al-Baqarah 2:163

وَإِلَـٰهُكُمْ إِلَـٰهٌ وَٰحِدٌ ۖ لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

“And your god is one God. There is no deity [worthy of worship] except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.”

Essence

The One you are made to turn to is one, with no second and no like, and His oneness is wrapped in mercy.

A reflection

'Describe your Lord to us'

Picture the courtyard of the Kaʿba in those years. The sources report three hundred and sixty idols around it. Each tribe had its own, carved, dressed and carried. Into that crowded market of gods, the pagans of Quraysh put a question to the Prophet ﷺ. 'Describe your Lord to us.' One report says they asked for His lineage, as one asks about a person's family.

The answer came in nine words. 'Your god is one God. There is no god but He, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.' No statue, no lineage, no list of rivals. Just: one.

An early commentator explains what this does to every other claimant. Whatever you set up alongside Him is one of His creatures, like you. A linguist among the commentators goes further. Everything other than Allah is either a blessing or someone blessed. Only He is the giver of every blessing, its roots and its branches.

That sentence has a quiet target: the ego. We rarely carve idols today. But we set up our own judgement, our career, our reputation, our need to be right. We serve them as faithfully as any tribe served its statue. Each is a creature, a blessing or someone blessed. None of them is the Giver.

Someone may object: is a God who demands to be the only one not jealous, even insecure? But insecurity needs something. Allah needs nothing (35:15). Exclusive worship adds nothing to Him. It frees the worshipper from three hundred and sixty masters. The idols of Makkah were eventually broken. The ayah does the same work inside a person. It clears the courtyard until only one door is left to knock on.
