Al-An'am · Makki · ayah 149 of 165
Al-An'am 6:149
قُلْ فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْحُجَّةُ ٱلْبَـٰلِغَةُ ۖ فَلَوْ شَآءَ لَهَدَىٰكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
“Say, "With Allāh is the far-reaching [i.e., conclusive] argument. If He had willed, He would have guided you all."”
Saheeh International
Essence
The last word is Allah's, an argument that reaches the heart, and the One who could compel every heart chose to persuade instead.
A reflection
The last word, held without raising a voice
Every family seems to have one. An uncle who must have the last word in every argument. He repeats himself, raises his voice, changes the subject, anything but let a point stand against him. Years later, the family remembers his volume, not his reasons.
The ayah settles who truly has the last word. Fa-lillāhi al-ḥujjatu al-bālighah: to Allah belongs the conclusive argument. The word order carries weight, because 'to Allah' comes first. One classical commentary reads it as 'to Allah alone'. The argument the polytheists hoped to win in 6:148 was never theirs to win.
But notice how He holds that last word. Not with force. The ayah goes straight on: had He willed, He would have guided you all. The One with every power to compel declines to compel. One classical writer explains that His wisdom refuses to force all creation onto one path. His justice refuses to take anyone to account without proof. So He established the proof, varied the signs and struck the parables.
That is where the ego shrinks. Our need to win arguments is usually a need to be seen winning. The uncle's volume was fear dressed as strength. The One who cannot lose an argument has no need to shout. He explains, waits, and leaves the door open.
A fair objection: is it not arrogant for anyone to claim the final argument? Arrogance is claiming to be right with nothing behind the claim. That was the uncle. It was also the polytheists, whose 'knowledge' could not be brought out. Allah's claim comes with the proof laid out: the creation this surah has walked through, the messengers, the Book. And He gains nothing by winning. The guidance, if you take it, is yours.
So the next time you feel the pull of pride, the urge to have the last word, remember whose it really is. Say what is true once, clearly. Then let it stand.
