Al-An'am · Makki · ayah 22 of 165
Al-An'am 6:22
“And [mention, O Muḥammad], the Day We will gather them all together; then We will say to those who associated others with Allāh, "Where are your 'partners' that you used to claim [with Him]?"”

Essence
Everyone will be gathered, none missing, and the One who gathers will ask what every borrowed hope must one day answer: where are they now?
A reflection
One floor, one blanket, one question
In a flood, the sports hall at the edge of town fills by midnight. A man from the big house by the river lies on a camp bed. Beside him is a family from the caravan park, with their dog. He owns three cars, and all of them are under water. Nobody asks which house he came from. Everyone is handed the same foil blanket.
The first hearers had a sharper picture for ḥashr. A hard drought year was said to ḥashara a tribe. It drove every herd and household out of the open desert and into the towns. A poet said that no wild beast and no man escaped such a year. The ayah adds jamīʿan, all together. Nobody is left behind in the desert. There is no private entrance, and no one is excused.
Then comes the second verb: naqūlu, We say. The commentaries discuss whether this is spoken directly or through angels. The wording itself is plain: 'We say'. The question comes from the One whose Day it is.
This is where the ego meets its true size. Much of our pride rests on not having to answer. We screen calls, keep people who handle things, and choose which questions we take. Status is often the right to be unavailable. In this ayah that right is withdrawn from everyone at once. The person who never queued will stand where everyone stands. The one who answered to no board will answer to the King.
Is it beneath Allah to gather people only to rebuke them? A human ruler humiliates his rivals because he fears them, or needs to feel bigger. Allah fears no one and gains nothing from anyone's shame. One commentary says the question exists to make them face what they assumed. It adds that, told to us now, it becomes a warning in this world. The Day is described in advance so that nobody arrives at the sports hall surprised.
