Az-Zumar 39:3

“Unquestionably, for Allāh is the pure religion.[1339] And those who take protectors besides Him [say], "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allāh in position." Indeed, Allāh will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allāh does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever.”

Essence

Pure devotion belongs to Allah alone; the old excuse that lesser patrons bring us nearer to Him is answered with a coming verdict.

A reflection

Mixed devotion counts as nothing

Read the first clause slowly, because every part of it is pressing in the same direction. Alā: listen, take note. Then a sentence with no verb, a statement of fact rather than a request. The name of Allah placed first, so that it means 'to Allah, and to no one else'. Then al-dīn, the whole of obedience. Then al-khāliṣ, the pure, the unmixed.

One commentary lists these features one by one and draws the conclusion. The ayah is built to show that devotion which is not pure is as if it did not exist. It is not a lesser grade of worship. It does not register.

That is hard on the ego, because the ego likes a share. Picture a businessman who funds a new wing for a mosque. He asks, in passing, that the plaque carry his family name in large letters. Nothing wrong with a name. But notice the quiet wish to stand a little beside Allah in the building raised for Him.

We all keep such corners. A prayer that is partly for the person beside us. A gift that is partly for the thanks. The ayah does not shame us for having them. It simply tells us the arithmetic: what is mixed is not received as worship.

A sceptic might ask whether insisting on all of it is a kind of divine vanity. The answer runs the other way. He is free of need, and loses nothing when we hold back. A mixed offering fails because it was never fully given, not because He was offended. Purity is what makes a gift a gift.
