Al-An'am · Makki · ayah 86 of 165
Al-An'am 6:86
وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ وَٱلْيَسَعَ وَيُونُسَ وَلُوطًا ۚ وَكُلًّا فَضَّلْنَا عَلَى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
“And Ishmael and Elisha and Jonah and Lot - and all [of them] We preferred over the worlds.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Ismaʿil, al-Yasaʿ, Yunus and Lut: each raised above the worlds by Allah's overflowing gift, not by headcount, flawlessness or fame.
A reflection
Rank as overflow, not as salary
The ayah does not say these four excelled. It says faḍḍalnā: We preferred them. The verb belongs to Allah, and so does the rank.
The root carries a picture worth keeping. The lexicons define faḍl as an increase, what goes beyond the measured amount. Then comes the key line. Every gift that the giver was not obliged to give is called faḍl. So faḍḍala is to let that overflow fall on one more than another.
A consultant surgeon is clearing her late mother's papers. She finds a letter from twenty-five years ago. Her place at medical school was paid for by a fund an anonymous donor had set up. She had always told the story as hers: the exams, the night shifts, the grit. The grit was real. But the door it walked through had been opened by a gift she never knew of.
That is the shape of every human excellence. Talent, health, a teacher at the right time, a mind that did not break. None of it was owed. The ego tells a story of earning. The ayah tells a story of overflow.
Is preferring some unfair to the rest? Fairness concerns what is owed, and no one is owed an overflow. Withholding a gift wrongs no one, while withholding a wage would. And the preference here, the commentaries say, is prophethood: a weight of mission, not a cushion.
This is majesty that humbles without crushing. If even prophets are ranked by His gift, then pride in any rank of ours is a misreading. We are carrying something poured into us.
Why does Allah announce His preferring at all? Not to be flattered. He is not enlarged by our knowing it. The announcement protects us from a lie we would otherwise live inside: that we made ourselves. The One who gives without owing is the only One who can say 'We preferred' without vanity.
