Al-Qalam 68:48
فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ
“Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muḥammad], and be not like the companion of the fish [i.e., Jonah] when he called out while he was distressed.”

Essence
Patience is a soul held tethered on purpose, not one that bolts the moment waiting becomes unbearable.
A reflection
A soul held on a lead, not simply waiting
Iṣbir, be patient, comes from ṣabr, a root the lexicons picture first as confinement: an animal tied up and held in place, kept from wandering off even without fodder in front of it to make the staying easy. The Arabs extended the same image to the self — holding one's own soul the way a handler holds a working animal, anchored rather than left to stray wherever the moment's pull wants to take it.
This is a far more active picture than patience is usually given credit for. It is not passive endurance, a simple waiting-out of discomfort until it passes on its own. It is a deliberate tethering, a choice to keep the self in place precisely when every impulse is pulling toward motion — toward leaving, lashing out, forcing a resolution now rather than on the timeline actually given.
A working dog that strains at its tether all morning is not being treated cruelly by a rope that seems, from outside, needlessly restrictive. Its handler knows exactly when the right moment to release it will come, and the tether is what keeps the dog from ruining that moment by bolting too soon.
The Prophet ﷺ is commanded to hold himself this way — tethered to his Lord's timing specifically, not simply enduring hardship until it ends. What comes next in this same passage shows exactly what happens when that tether is let go too early. There is a reason this particular command follows directly after the ayat on respite and gradual consequence (68:44-45). If Allah's plan against those who reject the truth is already set and already firm, nothing is gained by the Prophet ﷺ forcing a resolution ahead of its time. The tether and the timeline belong to the same single instruction: let the plan already described unfold as it was always going to, and hold your own position until it does.
