Al-An'am 6:95

“Indeed, Allāh is the cleaver of grain and date seeds.[329] He brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living. That is Allāh; so how are you deluded?”

Essence

The first proof offered is the thing you spat out after eating a date, and then a question: how are you being turned away?

A reflection

The prize marrow and the One who split the seed

Indeed Allah is the splitter of the grain and the date-stone. The sentence opens with inna, indeed, and names Allah before anything else. Then it gives Him a title that sounds almost too small for Him: the One who splits seeds.

Picture the vegetable tent at a village show. A retired man has won the prize for the heaviest marrow, three years running. He gives a short speech about his compost, his watering schedule, the way he turns the soil in February. Everyone applauds. He is a skilled gardener, and his care was real.

But he did not split a single seed. Every one of them cracked open in the dark by a power he does not have and could not explain. He supplied the conditions. Something else supplied the life.

That is the ego's quiet error with almost everything it produces. A business, a family, a career, a body of work: we provide the effort and then take the credit for the growth. The ayah does not belittle the effort. It simply assigns the splitting to its owner.

A sceptic might ask whether it is arrogant for God to keep naming Himself as the source. But arrogance is claiming what is not yours. In a creature, pride is a lie; in the Creator, the same statement is simply accurate. He needs nothing from our acknowledgement; He is free of all need (35:15).

What the acknowledgement does is free us. The gardener who knows who splits the seeds can take his prize humbly and sleep well in a bad year. Neither the success nor the failure was entirely his.
