Al-An'am 6:99

“And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things. We produce from it greenery from which We produce grains arranged in layers. And from the palm trees - of its emerging fruit are clusters hanging low. And [We produce] gardens of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at [each of] its fruit when it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.”

Essence

From one rainfall come grain, dates, grapes, olives and pomegranates, and then a command anyone can obey: watch a fruit ripen.

A reflection

Who arranged the seeds inside

The ayah begins in the third person: He is the One who sent down water from the sky. Then, mid-sentence, it changes voice. Fa-akhrajnā: and We brought out by it the growth of every thing. One concise commentary names the device: a turn from the absent 'He' to the speaking 'We'. The majestic plural steps forward at the moment the plants appear.

It is as if the Speaker wants to be seen at the point of greatest wonder. Rain is sent; that is distant. Life breaking out of the ground is close, and here He speaks in His own voice.

Picture a food photographer working on a magazine cover. She spends three hours on one pomegranate. She turns it, cuts it, arranges the light so the seeds glow like small red lamps. The final image is stunning, and her name goes in the credits. Nobody asks who arranged the seeds inside, each in its own pale pocket, before she ever picked up the knife.

That is how the ego handles beauty. We frame it, photograph it, sell it, and take the credit for the framing. The ayah does not dismiss the framing. It simply speaks, in the first person, about what was framed.

A sceptic may ask whether this insistent 'We' is God drawing attention to Himself. But He gains nothing from our attention; He is free of all need (35:15). The 'We' is for us. It turns a fruit bowl into a meeting. Each time you cut open something beautiful, the ayah suggests, the Maker is speaking.
