Al-Mumtahanah 60:13

“O you who have believed, do not make allies of a people with whom Allāh has become angry. They have despaired of [reward in] the Hereafter just as the disbelievers have despaired of [meeting] the companions [i.e., inhabitants] of the graves.”

Essence

The surah closes exactly where it opened, because a life that has given up on the Hereafter entirely changes how it treats everyone else.

A reflection

The surah closes its own circle

This surah opened with the same address and the same warning this closing ayah returns to: believers, do not take a people as allies. The commentaries note the structure directly: the caution against allying with active hostility, stated once at the very start, is restated here at the very end, so that the whole surah is framed, deliberately, by the same instruction at both ends.

This is not simple repetition for emphasis. Between these two matching bookends sits everything the surah actually built: the real cost of divided loyalty in Hatib's story, the precise boundary between caution and cruelty in the surah's central ayat, the dower arrangement, the Pledge of the Women. The ring does not simply restate the opening. It returns to it having earned the right to say it more precisely, because the reader has now seen exactly where the line falls and exactly where it does not.

A piece of writing built this way asks something specific of its reader: to notice, on reaching the end, how much has actually changed since the beginning, even though the words framing it have come back around to where they started. A surah is not a list of separate instructions placed one after another. It is argued, and the closing line only means what it fully means once the whole argument that led to it has been heard.

Arriving back at the opening words is not a sign that nothing moved. It is the sign that the whole shape has now closed.
